◈ Everyone says that this is the doorstep of the Copper Canyons, that there is a wealth of natural beauty, and that you will leave part of your heart here when you receive a Rarámuri smile, but no one prepares you for the adventure that is about to begin once you step foot in Creel.

❖ Copper Canyons
Many travelers will attest that the Copper Canyons are “the most beautiful thing I have seen in my entire life.” It is not for nothing. This marvel of the Sierra Tarahumara lands is one of the longest and deepest canyon systems in the world. In all, it covers 37 thousand miles of mountains. There are many ways to experience them: from a train, a zip line, a mountaintop hotel, or even better, spending time in a Rarámuri town. During the winter, nature puts on a show covering the peaks with snow.
❖ Cusárare
As with many Rarámuri towns, Cusárare is a tiny, remote hamlet anchored by a stone church. In fact, it is heir to a mission established by the Jesuits in the 17th century. Nearby is a stunning waterfall, plunging almost 100 feet, framed by a rocky riverbed and mountains covered with a vast pine forest. During the second half of the year, when the rains fill the Cusárare river, the waterfall becomes a thick white curtain foaming over red rocks, while the streams shimmer turquoise blue. There is no way around it. It is one of the most beautiful shows of the Sierra Tarahumara region.
❖ Cristo Rey
Temple and Monument
The church and monument to Christ the King are the town’s biggest attractions. The neo-Gothic-style church is on the main square. The monument is a 26-foot tall Christ at the top of one of the hills that surround the town. There is a lookout spot—something you should keep in mind if you want to enjoy a spectacular view. To reach it, you have to follow a path that can be a bit confusing, so pay attention to the route you take.

One of the most extraordinary mountain parks in the world, it will blow your mind.
Board El Chepe train in Creel, and hop off at the next station, Divisadero. Here is one of the most amazing mountain parks in the world. In addition to gorgeous views, the park has more than a dozen activities to try.
If you are in the area, check out what there is to do: whiz down any of its seven zip lines and cross two hanging bridges on a 3-mile circuit. For the more daring, there is the world’s longest zip line—8,300 feet long—letting riders reach more than 62 mph in only 15 seconds. The ride takes two and a half minutes, and has stops to keep your adrenaline in check.
There are additional trails for hiking and riding mountain bikes, and there is Salto de Tarzán, with vine-like cables so you can swing just like the character. Campgrounds are also available. The least heart-pounding option is taking the cable car, open to the whole public.
❖ Spend the Afternoon
in Valle de los Monjes
In the Sierra Tarahumara region within the state of Chihuahua hides a valley populated by gigantic columns of rocks that have stood here for millions of years. This is Valle de los Monjes (literally called “Valley of the Monks”).
Legend has it that these are monks who were petrified while deep in reflection. Science tells us that they are rocky formations eroded by rain and wind. However they came to be, they are spectacular. Seize your chance to get a closer look.

Señora de Guadalupe en Creel
On December 12th, without a doubt, is one of the most important religious commemorations in Mexico.
In Creel, this day is celebrated with vibrant and colorful festivities deeply connected to the Rarámuri traditions. Additionally, at midnight on the 11th of Saturday, Las Mañanitas are sung.

San Ignacio de Loyola
en Creel
This festival is held in honor of the founder of the Society of Jesus. It takes place on July 31st in Arareko, in accordance with Rarámuri roots.
A patronal celebration is held, featuring a fair, Masses, gastronomic tastings, processions, and dances.
❖ Holy Week in Creel
During this remarkable celebration, the Tarahumara follow customs different from the traditional festivities in other parts of Mexico. They gather in colorful attire around the church to hear the nawésari, or sermon.
