The Vía Ferrata, or iron pathway, which lets you climb 656 feet up rock faces. ❖ Parque Nacional El Chico This protected area will delight you with its more than 2,700 hectares of forests. The national park also encompasses Mirador Peña del Cuervo, a lookout offering sweeping views of the Magical Town and surrounding mountain range. There are also a variety of trails for mountain bike fans. There are safe areas for camping with family, friends, or as a couple. Among boulders, sacred firs, and oaks, you can drink in the cool, peaceful mountain atmosphere. ❖ Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción Built in 1725, this church has an elegant neoclassical limestone facade. It also prominently features a clock hanging on the side wall. It was donated in 1886 by Gabriel Mancera, the owner of several mines in the region. Below the timepiece is the manicured center garden, with a wrought iron gazebo and fountain. ❖ Centro Recreativo El Cedral Located in the town of Estanzuela, this is one of Mexico’s oldest parks. It has a lake where you can rent boats and have fun on the water. And on its shores, you can camp with family and friends. The trails through the woods are perfect for soaking up nature by hiking or taking a bike ride. ❖ Climb the Vía Ferrata This is the most adrenaline-charged activity you can do in Mineral del Chico. Useful Information Vía Ferrata Mineral del Chico is on a mountain also known as La Tanda that is 656 feet high. It is just 20 minutes from the Magical Town’s downtown. ❖ Get Lost in a Stone Maze One of Mineral del Chico’s best kept secrets is Contadero, a space with an incredible stone maze. Years ago, this naturally-occurring formation was a hideout for bandits, who took refuge here to escape from their pursuers. The name, meaning a place to count, came about because robbers would count their booty here. The route is made up of two and a half miles of climbs and crests. When you get to Valle de las Ranas, you can take a break to take in the spectacular view of the valley edged by craggy bluffs. Then you’ll climb over rocks, before finally reaching Contadero. If you would rather not walk, get a good vehicle because it is dirt roads all the way. When you get there, the mind-blowing view of trees and streams make it well worth the effort. Don’t count on using your cell phone because you probably won’t have reception or GPS. ❖ Take the Bait and Go Fishing Near Mineral del Chico is El Milagro river and Jaramillo and Cedral dams. The latter is just 12 miles from the city of Pachuca along Mineral del Chico’s tourist corridor. You can fish for trout, small bass, and carp in all these spots. ❖ Fiesta de la Purísima Concepción This celebration honors the Immaculate Conception, the town’s patron saint. On this day, the streets fill with mariachi bands, food, mass, processions, and fireworks. Before the festivities, there are events such as the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree, competitions, live music, and dances.
