The church’s architecture is modern but beautiful; it also has a chapel that is a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. These refugee Virgins are celebrated at the end of November and the beginning of December. ❖ Capilla de Santa María Magdalena Visit this chapel to see where evangelization in the area began. A remnant of the region’s history, it is a priceless jewel. Built in the 16th century, this chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene belonged to the governor of Nueva Galicia, Cristóbal de Oñate. It became the region’s first chapel, where the Augustine diocese set out to evangelize the area, and as a result, founded Tacámbaro. ❖ Catedral de San Jerónimo The Catedral de San Jerónimo is located where Augustine monks built a convent in the 16th century. The cathedral’s unusual copper dome replaced the original one which collapsed in the earthquake in 1985. Behind the cathedral is the Templo del Hospital, another colonial-era church. ❖ Kayak on Laguna and La Alberca Lakes Swim or kayak on these bodies of water that are the subjects of so many mysterious legends. Both lakes have a volcanic origin and are set in volcanic craters surrounded by lush vegetation. Their mystical beauty will captivate you. Listen to the stories and legends the townspeople tell about them. You can camp, swim, and kayak here. ❖ Visit Parque Ecológico Cerro Hueco Enjoy the great outdoors in this family-friendly park. This nature park makes for a great outing with family and friends. The landscape is covered with pines and plenty of green spaces, and La Alberca, a lake cradled in a volcanic crater can be seen from here. You can hike, camp, mountain bike, and ride horses. Another suggestion is Balneario Arroyo Frío. We suggest enjoying this water park during spring and summer time. ❖ Savor Tacámbaro’s Culinary Delights This is one of the best spots in the state to eat. The crispy pork carnitas are excellent—Rey Tacamba’s are famous. Other can’t-miss dishes: aporreadillo (eggs scrambled with partially-dried meat), ox tail, trout, and steamed tacos. Hotel El Molino’s chili peppers, as well as its avocado omelet, are legendary. A dish blending traditional and modern is the carnitas pizza in Burger Lunch. If you are in Pedernales, look for Doña Bruna and try her bolas de masa, small corn dumplings filled with beans, cheese, and dried beef. ❖ Batalla Tacámbaro During April there are several cultural activities that commemorate the anniversary of the Batalla de Tacámbaro. The historic battle took place on April 11, 1865, during the Second French intervention in Mexico. Magical Towns in Michoacán . More Magical Towns in this area Mazamitla 2 min. Lagos de Moreno 3 min.
